Pania of the Reef - Character: Pania
On the East Coast of the North Island in a town called Napier, lived a lovely woman called Pania. Pania has lovely straight rainbow coloured hair and her eyes are as green as greenstone.
Pania was a graceful creature of the deep sea. When Pania was on land she was like an ordinary person. The land always fascinated Pania, and she would swim the surf to the beach.
During night fall Pania would hide behind some flax bushes. One night while Pania was on land, a young chief came near where Pania was hiding and got some water from his calabash. Then one evening the young chief saw Pania and came to where she was hiding. The young chief took Pania’s hand in his. He led Pania back to the whare in the pa. In the darkness they lay as man and wife through the night.
