Term 2 Writing The Giant Kiwi Of The Manawatu Hills - Retell A Maori Legand

THE GIANT KIWI OF THE MANAWATU HILLS

In the Manawatu Hills lived two friends. Their names were Māto and Mere. Māto and Mere loved to play games outside their pa. One day when they were playing, Mere didn't know where she was going and left Māto. When Mere noticed she was lost, she heard big footsteps. ‘Thump’ they were getting louder. ‘Thump!’ And louder. ‘Thump!!’ Mere knew what that noise was. It was the giant kiwi Iwaka! When Mere saw Iwaka, she screamed! Māto heard Mere scream and rushed out of the pa, he searched and searched for her, but he couldn't find her. Then he saw footprints. Māto said “These must be Meres!” So Māto followed the footprints, then he saw footprints bigger than him! “Iwaka must have taken her!” Said Māto. “It's gonna take awhile to get where Iwaka is!” So Māto went back to the pa to get his mere (greenstone). After Māto got the mere, he set off to the top of the Manawatu Hills. Finally he reached the top. He saw someone running towards him. Then he noticed it was Mere! “Mere!” Said Māto. “You must go! If Iwaka awakes and I am gone, he will hunt me down and find who took me!” Said Mere. Then, Māto had a plan. “I could burn him so he won't bother anyone anymore!” “Great idea Māto!” replied Mere. So they gathered wood and made a fire. Then they burnt him and everyone was safe!
